Diabetes by the Numbers
- 96 million U.S. adults have pre-diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes usually develops later in a person’s life: however, in recent decades, type 2 diabetes has increased among US children and adolescents aged 10 to 19
- For adults with diagnosed diabetes:
- 69% had high blood pressure
- 44% had high cholesterol
- 39% had chronic kidney disease
- 12% reported having vision impairment or blindness
- A study from 2017 estimated that diabetes costs the U.S. $327 billion each year, which was a 26% increase over 2012 estimates
- 26% of Medicare beneficiaries have diabetes; studies suggest that diabetes out-of-pocket medical costs average $4600 yearly
