Diabetes by the Numbers

  • 96 million U.S. adults have pre-diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes usually develops later in a person’s life: however, in recent decades, type 2 diabetes has increased among US children and adolescents aged 10 to 19
  • For adults with diagnosed diabetes: 


    • 69% had high blood pressure 
    • 44% had high cholesterol
    • 39% had chronic kidney disease
    • 12% reported having vision impairment or blindness


  • A study from 2017 estimated that diabetes costs the U.S. $327 billion each year, which was a 26% increase over 2012 estimates
  • 26% of Medicare beneficiaries have diabetes; studies suggest that diabetes out-of-pocket medical costs average $4600 yearly
