Diabetes and Racial & Ethnic Disparities
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death among Americans and is more common among people who are of racial and ethnic minorities and communities with lower socioeconomic status.
- The American Diabetes Association (ADA) notes that Black Americans are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes
- People of color with diabetes often suffer from comorbidities at alarmingly higher rates than their White counterparts. Another noted complication for people with diabetes are lower limb amputations, with minorities again make up most of this population
