MCEDs: The Future of Cancer Detection, Investigational Testing

Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCEDs)1 testing measures signals in the blood for cancer, also known as biomarkers. Work is underway to develop and market MCEDs to screen for cancers across the body and detect signs for cancer at much earlier stages.

MCEDs tests2 look for signs of cancer in the blood with a single blood draw and can detect cancers in the body before symptoms show up, allowing cancer to be treated earlier.

According to the American Cancer Society3, 70% of cancer deaths are related to cancers with no proven screening tests available.

What kinds of cancers can potentially be detected with MCED tests?

MCED tests measure different biological signals that may be shed by cancer cells. Depending on what is measured, detected cancers may vary. One test may screen for colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer, while another may screen for a different group of cancer types. To date, each MCED test under development looks for a different group of cancers.

Some pharmaceutical companies, are developing MCED tests that check for cancer signs through bloodwork.
